Out of date node.js install on ubuntu

When I try to install node on ubuntu 24 (and other versions), `sudo apt install nodejs` gives me node v8. I get a similar issue installing npm. The only way around is to install nvm separately and then update node and npm from there. Why does this happen and how can I avoid it without nvm? Thanks!
